Sound of Metal Wins Two Oscars

The 93rd annual Academy Awards unveiled its winners last Sunday, and a big champ—at least where the addiction recovery community is concerned—was Sound of Metal. The film earned six nominations and won for Best Film Editing and Best Sound. The drama is an honest depiction of addiction recovery, and the praise and accolades it has received represent a step forward in the representation of the addiction community and the importance of recovery.

IRETA Webinar on Harm Reduction

The free Institute of Research, Education & Training in Addictions (IRETA) webinar “Understanding Harm Reduction—a New Paradigm for Treating Risky and Addictive Behavior” is scheduled for May 5 from 2:30–4 p.m. EST. The webinar will discuss integrative harm reduction psychotherapy and the limitations of the abstinence-only approach.

Hazelden Webinar on Teen Substance Use and Sexual Health

On May 12 from 2:30-3:30 pm EST, the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation will host the webinar “Teen Substance Use and Reproductive Health.” OB-GYN and addiction medicine physician Alta DeRoo, M.D., will discuss the physiological effects of substance use on adolescent sexual and reproductive health. A certificate of completion will be awarded for attending this event. Registration is open.
