From Barney and Friends through Camp Rock to her rise to international musical stardom, Demi Lovato has lived in the public eye. Audiences grew up with her and grew close to her; in upbeat characters such as Camp Rock’s Mitchie and the title character from Sonny with a Chance, Lovato embodied youthful exuberance, with apparent ease. But her ascent had a darker side—including disordered eating, alcoholism and substance misuse.

Since the 2010s, Lovato has been open about her personal battles, never more so than in Dancing with the Devil, a YouTube Original series centered on her near-fatal 2018 overdose. In the four-parter, whose first two episodes debuted on March 23, the onetime Disney darling, now 28, reveals raw and intimate details of her life in—and outside—the spotlight.
