International Overdose Awareness Day
Aug. 31 will mark the 20th anniversary of International Overdose Awareness Day, held each year as an initiative of the Pennington Institute, an organization dedicated to creating a healthier world. The day is meant to raise awareness, as well as to honor those lost to drug-related overdoses, reduce stigma surrounding substance use disorder and communicate the message that these tragedies are preventable. It serves as a call to action for anyone who is able to help. Some people wear a silver badge, purple wristband or purple lanyard as a show of support and solidarity.
A number of events will take place worldwide to commemorate International Overdose Awareness Day, including memorials, social media campaigns, fundraisers and awareness events and presentations. Many of these are offered virtually in addition to in-person. Those who wish to post a tribute to a loved one may do so here, and donations are also accepted.
