CPA meeting highlights “Addictive Behaviors Across the Lifespan,” Illinois decriminalizes marijuana, and Demi Lovato’s first-hand look at addiction

Collaborative Perspectives on Addiction 2021
This year’s Collaborative Perspectives on Addiction meeting will be a virtual, synchronous event featuring two keynote addresses, by Sara Jo Nixon, Ph.D. (University of Florida), and Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin, Ph.D. (Yale School of Medicine), that will highlight cutting-edge research and clinical advances. Its theme is “Substance Use and Addictive Behaviors Across the Lifespan.” The meeting will occur from March 17–20 at various times to accommodate the multiple time zones of speakers and participants. It is open to registration.

NAADAC Webinar
As a part of its free webinar series, NAADAC will host “Addiction and Recovery 2021: The Latest Findings from Neuroscience Research” on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m. EST. The webinar will grant NAADAC members 1.5 free continuing education hours (CEs); nonmembers can pay for the 1.5 CEs. Registration is now open.

Illinois Actions Toward Cannabis Decriminalization
Following the mandates in the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act he signed into law in May 2019, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced on New Year’s Eve that he had issued thousands of pardons for low-level cannabis convictions and expunged the records of almost half a million non-felony cannabis-related arrests. As the United States moves further toward marijuana legalization, advocates hope other states will follow in Illinois’ footsteps.

Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil
In a recent Twitter post, singer Demi Lovato announced the release of her new YouTube Originals docuseries Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil. The series explores Lovato’s issues with addiction, as she opens up about her near-fatal overdose in 2018 and her personal journey since then. The first two episodes of the docuseries will premiere for free on Lovato’s YouTube channel on March 23, with the final two episodes premiering March 30 and April 6.
