Historic Long Beach, CA Property Gains Attention of Addiction Treatment Providers

03/01/2015 -ATIN – A battle is breaking out over the future of a big historic property in downtown Long Beach, CA that could possibly involve an outcome where the building becomes in some way an addiction treatment facility, which would mean the conversion of the real estate from its current use as a center for the care of the elderly, according to published reports. Those involved in the care of the elderly have shown an interest in the addiction treatment business, a good example being the emergence in the last several years of an executive named A.J. Schreiber first with his Recovery Road in South Florida, backed and involved as he was and has been by elderly care concern Platinum Healthcare, and then the creation by Schreiber, pictured below, of SunspireHealth. Sunspire has grown mainly through acquisition and has nine for-profit properties ranging from Astoria Pointe in Oregon, a property in Hilton Head, SC, the founding Recovery Road property in Florida and others in places like California, according to Sunspire’s latest newsletter.

Possible Long Beach Conversion?

According to published reports late this week, the historic property in Long Beach, CA called The Breakers has run into some trouble with accusations of substandard care delivery for the elderly and has now become the focus of a possible conversion of the large property into one that would instead service those who suffer from the disease of addiction. Solid Landings Behavioral Health of Costa Mesa, CA, which according to a report already runs a couple of addiction care facilities, told reporters late last week that it was in lease negotiations with the owners of the big Long Beach property but emphasized that things were in a highly preliminary stage and that no deal is even close to being consumated. Reports also said other addiction treatment providers have also shown interest in the Long Beach high-rise style structure, pictured above, including San Clemente-based Sovereign HealthSan Clemente

Inevitable NIMBY Reaction

The reports about the Long Beach property have mentioned, inevitability, that neighborhood associations once they got wind of a possible conversion into an addiction care facility have raised objections, which could mean a possible long fight for anyone wishing to make the property into an addiction treatment facility.
