New Referral Agent: Your Local Police Dept  E-mail
Addiction Treatment Industry Newswire

11/17/2016 - ATIN - Always on the lookout for new referral sources, treatment centers may want to consider a new and very surprising source of new clientele: the police. A key experiment is underway in a small fishing community near Boston where the local police department is encouraging addicts to walk in and, instead of facing arrest, they will be helped into treatment.

The police chief of Gloucester, MA says his department stands with addicts down the line as they enter detox and treatment, adding that traditional enforcement action in the drug fight had become overwhelmed by the sheer immensity of the problem. Gloucester, like the rest of America in recent years, has seen surging rates of addiction and massive increases in overdose calls to the local 911 number.

A wealthy local businessman has teamed with the department to create the Police Assisted Recovery program, which over the last 16 months has refered over 500 addicts to treatment.
