NIMBY Kills Big U New Mexico Addictions Expansion

11/16/2012 -ATIN- A plan for a big expansion of one New Mexico’s oldest addiction treatment drug rehab alcohol rehab players, the 30-yr-old University of New Mexico affiliated Addictions and Substance Abuse Program, ASAP, has been shelved because of intense neighborhood opposition, according to University of New Mexico Hospitals CEO Steve McKernan.

Admittedly, the neighborhood in Albuquerque proposed for the big ASAP expansion already has a lot of addictions facilities, including a couple of methadone clinics, Bernalillo County’s government owned detox facility, private inpatient provider Turquoise Lodge and a pretty big private sober living operation called Endorphin Power Company. hat a location search for ASAP expansion will continue urgently, adding that area services capabilities have declined in the past 20 yrs accompanied by a vast increase in the numbers of addicted individuals needing help.
