Alcohol Recovery Program Scholarships
The digital treatment provider Tempest intends to offer a total of more than 10,000 months of free membership to its alcohol recovery program, catering to LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities. Nico Tortorella (they/them), Tempest’s first-ever scholarship chairperson, will spearhead the initiative.
“My goal has always been to create a public platform that I could use to help others,” Tortorella said in a news release. “I didn’t have access to a program like Tempest when I first got sober. So, I’m very excited to be able to help give people like me access to such an empowering resource.”
The program continues Tempest’s mission to identify populations most in need of scholarship opportunities. Tempest was founded in 2014 under the name Hip Sobriety.
An ASAM Call for Abstracts
The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) will hold its 53rd Annual Conference on innovations in addiction medicine and science from March 31 to April 3, 2022. The ASAM is calling on all members interested in submitting abstracts for poster presentations, focus sessions and workshop sessions to do so by Oct. 1. Individuals from diverse fields and organizations, including researchers, clinicians and young investigators, are encouraged to submit. Guidelines and registration information can be found here.
NAADAC Announces 2021 Awards
NAADAC, the Association of Addiction Professionals, congratulates the recipients of the 2021 NAADAC Awards for their contributions to the field of addiction treatment. Videos and information about the six award winners can be viewed here.
National Recovery Month Panel and Concert
National Recovery Month initiatives and events continue as we enter the final week of September. The not-for-profit substance use treatment provider Gateway Foundation is extending an invitation to its Recovery For All Panel on Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. EST. The event will take place virtually, featuring Illinois service providers and stakeholders as panelists. To join, tune in on Gateway’s Facebook or YouTube platforms.
For those looking to celebrate and advocate for recovery by way of music, Recover Out Loud, an initiative supported by iHeart Media and Variety, will be live-streaming a concert featuring Macklemore and other headliners, including KT Tunstall, Evvie McKinney, Daphne Willis and The Residency, on International Recovery Day on Sept. 30. Listeners can tune in on iHeart’s Facebook and YouTube channels.
Virtual Event to Highlight Work by Shatterproof
The 2021 Shatterproof Chairman’s Reception, taking place virtually, will highlight the addiction nonprofit’s accomplishments throughout the year. Those who sign up here will be notified when registration opens.

Effective Strategies for Treating Stimulant Use
The Institute for Research Education and Training in Addictions (IRETA) has scheduled a webinar, “Stimulants: A Focus on Effective Treatment Interventions and Recovery Supports,” for Sept. 29 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. EST. Attendees will learn how to discuss relevant research, evidence-based behavioral interventions and specific recovery supports with those who use stimulants.
Cultural Competency for Stronger Client Relationships
NAADAC’s webinar “Through Rose-Colored Glasses: When Cultural Competency Isn’t Enough” will take place on Sept. 29 from 3 to 4:30 pm EST, and will cover the importance of cultural understanding in meeting the needs of clients and building trust. The presenters of the workshop will provide their insights on how underlying biases often hinder personal and professional relationships by engaging in self-reflection and personal stories.
