LA TIMES: Murder Charges for Doc in Overdoses

03/02/2012 -ATIN- The West Coast addiction scene was abuzz today as news reports flowed in that a Los Angeles doctor working out of a strip mall was charged with murder in the overdose deaths of three of her patients. The news came as the nation becomes increasingly focused on what is seen as an epidemic addiction to prescription medications, especially pain killers. The DEA recently tried to pull the licences of two CVS pharmacies, as well as one of the nation's largest wholesale drug distributors, Cardinal, in its efforts to crack down on diversion in Florida, which is big business in the state. The addiction industry has moved aggresively in recent years to develop products and services that seek to address the fast growing problem of addiction to prescription meds, with places like Casa Palmera in San Diego and CRC's Bayside Marin near San Francisco putting big emphasis on their chronic pain programs. And on the East Coast, Silver Hill, one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious behavioral health facilities, will soon be opening a brand new chronic pain center in a major initiative for the 80-year-old, New Canaan, CT-based addictions and mental health provider.
